An independent day school serving grades K-12 | St. Paul, MN

Athletics

SPA offers 19 varsity sports with additional teams at the junior varsity and C squad level, and 80% of Upper School students participate in one or more of these teams. The Upper School athletic program is a part of the Independent Metro Athletic Conference (IMAC), an athletic conference made up of five other independent, liberal arts college preparatory schools in the Twin Cities area.

Upper School student-athletes are expected to demonstrate a high level of commitment to their sports and their teams. We consider the playing field an extension of the classroom and gauge athletic achievement both on the outcome of games and on the sportsmanship, continued improvement and leadership of team members.

SPA's varsity teams are highly competitive and are very successful in conference, section, and state tournament competitions:

  • State Accolades: Ten SPA sports sent teams or individual athletes to State competition in 2018-19: cross country, football (state champions), girls' swimming and diving, nordic skiing (individual state champion), girls' hockey, fencing (state champions), alpine skiing, boys' swimming and diving, boys' tennis (doubles state champions), and track and field.
  • Conference Accolades: The 2018 volleyball team won the IMAC Conference Championship for the second year in a row. Additionally, the 2018-2019 girls' alpine skiing team also won the IMAC Conference Championship and the boys' swimming and diving team won the St. Paul Conference Championship for the fifth year in a row.
  • Individual Accolades: In addition, individual SPA athletes were recipients of more than 85 All-State and All-Conference honors in 2018-2019.
