M.A. French, University of Minnesota
Sophie Kerman teaches French and French-speaking culture in the Upper School. “What this means, in a broader sense, is teaching my students the ability to express themselves differently, a sense of curiosity about foreign cultures, and a way of looking at their own culture through a different lens,” she says.
“Foreign language is ultimately all about the global community, but I also love creating and developing a smaller classroom community as students work as a team to communicate in new ways and master new skills,” Kerman says. “SPA students bring so much energy and enthusiasm to class, and it is amazing to be a part of that spirit of collective discovery.”
At SPA since 2012, Kerman previously served as a Graduate Instructor of French at the University of Minnesota and as Assistante d’Anglais at Lycée Montesquieu in Herblay, France. She holds an M.A. in French from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. in sociology and anthropology from Carleton College.
In her free time, Kerman leads summer environmental service programs for high school volunteers with the Student Conservation Association, and has spent summers with them in Alaska, Maryland, and Washington. She also serves as a local theater critic.
