Kristin Flom teaches Middle School French and is the World Languages Department Chair. She has polished her language skills and immersed herself in French culture through her extensive travels. "I became a teacher because of my experience being a counselor at Concordia Language Villages French Village Lac du Bois during college," she says. "It was there that I found that my interests in kids, French, art and sports all converged. As a graduate of SPA, I had many fine examples to model myself after." She has received Lilly Fund grants to study in France, Quebec, Senegal, Haiti, and Martinique, and Wark grants for curriculum development. Mme. Flom joined the SPA faculty in 1989 and holds an M.Ed. in teaching second languages and cultures from the University of Minnesota and a B.A. in French from St. Olaf College. She has an interest in curriculum development and belongs to the American Association of Teachers of French and the Minnesota Council for Teachers of Foreign Languages. She has taught in Woodbury and Eden Prairie Schools and at The Prairie School in Racine, Wisc. "In my teaching, I try to make the language become real by creating situations in which the students must communicate in the language," she says. "For example, we had a French breakfast in class recently and the students had to ask for the food in French in order to get their serving of baguette and chocolat chaud." A triathlete who also plays hockey, Mme Flom has coached girls soccer and swimming. In her spare time, she enjoys family, sports, and travel.
