M.A. English, University of St. Thomas
Carrie Clark teaches seventh and eighth grade English Studio. “No matter how many times I teach a concept or a skill,” she says, “the kids' perspectives, questions, and interpretations add new layers. It's like having a lens that is a kaleidoscope.” She emphasizes relationships and community in her classroom, building trust and encouraging students to recognize the expertise they hold within themselves. “We talk a lot and use mistakes as learning opportunities, not failures or endpoints,” she says. One of her favorite times at SPA is watching students stand at a podium and read their creative writing out loud to the entire grade, something all eighth graders are expected to do once during the school year. "The writing comes alive in the space between students' voices and the community's ears, and the air vibrates with reverence for the courage it takes to write and speak about one's own experience." Ms. Clark earned a B.A. in English and political science from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio and an M.A. in English from the University of St. Thomas. She joined the SPA faculty in 2004. Her wide-ranging interests include gardening, contemporary literature, stargazing, kickboxing, artisan bread making, and adolescent development.
