M.A. English, University of St. Thomas
Carrie Clark teaches seventh and eighth grade English Studio. “No matter how many times I teach a concept or a skill,” she says, “the kids' perspectives, questions, and interpretations add new layers. It's like having a lens that is a kaleidoscope.” She emphasizes relationships and community in her classroom, building trust and encouraging students to recognize the expertise they hold within themselves. “We talk a lot and use mistakes as learning opportunities, not failures or endpoints,” she says. One of her favorite times at SPA has been working with eighth graders to problem solve for others through the design thinking process. "During the Winterupt weeks, students' drive kicks into high gear," she says. "They itch to get back at the work; their ideas spill into lunchtime conversations. The whole space is covered with evidence of creativity." Ms. Clark earned a B.A. in English and political science from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio and an M.A. in English from the University of St. Thomas. She joined the SPA faculty in 2004. Her wide-ranging interests include gardening, contemporary literature, politics, stargazing, artisan bread making, and adolescent development.
