Our Faculty

Our Upper School teachers blend a passion for teaching with disciplinary expertise and a genuine compassion and affection for the young adults who are their students. Upper School students largely view their teachers as subject experts and mentors rather than authoritarian figures, a view that makes the ultimate transition to college much smoother.

80% of our Upper School teachers hold advanced degrees in addition to the baccalaureate degree, and almost half of those teachers hold a doctorate or terminal degree in their field of study.

Alumnus Pete Daniels '02 was thrilled to come back to SPA as an Upper School Spanish teacher in 2016. Before returning, he worked at The Langley School of McLean, Virginia where he served 2011-2016 as an elementary and middle school Spanish teacher, World Language Department Head, advisor, and athletic coach. As a teacher, Peter continuously searches for inventive and authentic demonstrations of learning that prepare young minds to meet the challenges of the 21st century. He received his Master of Science in Education from the Johns Hopkins School of Education, including graduate certificates in Educational Leadership for Independent Schools, and Advanced Methods for Differentiated Instruction and Inclusive Education. Previously, Peter taught English at the Latino Student Fund of Washington, DC, trained teachers with WorldTeach in Ecuador from 2007-2010, and guided wilderness trips for youth at the YMCA Camp, Camp Widjiwagan.
