The defending 4A State Champions SMB Wolfpack are off to a strong start in defending their 2018 State title. The team, a cooperative between SPA, The Blake School, and Minnehaha Academy, are now 3-0 heading into the midpoint of the season.
The Wolfpack opened the season with a game against a tough running team in Columbia Heights, but came out strong with a 14-point third quarter and SPA senior captain Tommy Stolpestad '20 making key tackles on the defense. Stolpestad was also the lead blocker on many touchdown runs, contributing to the 35-7 SMB victory.
Week 2 brought SMB's home opener against the Spectrum Sting. Spectrum's offense prides itself on physical running plays, but the Wolfpack showed amazing resilience after being down 0-8 after the first quarter. Tommy Stolpestad '20 and freshman Brody Rindelaub '23 made key plays on the defensive end, sparking a 28-point second quarter and leading the Wolfpack to a 51-16 victory in front of their home crowd.
In week 3, the Wolfpack took on rival St. Croix Lutheran Academy--a well oiled-machine that runs an option offensive and a tough hard-hitting defensive. The emphasis for SMB in preparing for SCLA was getting off to a fast start, and on the very first defensive series, Tommy Stolpestad '20 led the defense to a three and out. Then on the very first two offensive plays, Stolpestad made the key blocks which allowed the runningbacks to make explosive plays down the field. This and key receptions by SPA sophomore Judah Thomas '22 helped ignite the Wolfpack to a 40-7 victory.
Next up for the Wolfpack will be a tough week 4 contest against another rival, Providence Academy, on Friday, September 20 at 7 p.m. at Providence.
