For the fourth year in a row, SPA's online student newspaper RubicOnline, is the recipient of a Pacemaker Award, the highest honor in student journalism. The Pacemaker is a program of the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) and is known as "the Pulitzer Prize" of student journalism. The Pacemaker awards were announced at the 2019 JEA/NSPA National Convention in Anaheim, California on April 27.
Pacemaker entries are judged by teams of professionals based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography, and graphics. The contests are open to any NSPA member publication. Entries must have been published or broadcast during the dates specified on each entry form.
In addition to the Pacemakers, the national convention also celebrated the national Journalist of the Year competition. SPA's Mimi Geller '19, Director of RubicOnline, was named the Minnesota Journalist of the Year earlier this spring and she represented SPA at the convention. We are so proud to announce that Mimi was one of the seven students honored as a Finalist in the national competition. Watch the live announcement on The Rubicon's facebook.
Finally, the NSPA Best in Show awards were also announced at the national convention and SPA took home four:
2nd place in Blogs | SPA Publications (print and online staff)
3rd place in Podcasts | SPA Publications (print, online, and Writing for Publication students)
2nd place in Literary Magazine | Iris: Art + Literature
8th place in Website | RubicOnline
Congratulations to all of our SPA student journalists on another impressive year of reporting!
