On Monday, March 11, the #6 seeded Spartan boys' basketball team upset #3 Cristo Rey Jesuit for the second year in the Section 4AA Quarterfinal.
The Spartans had to fight back early when they found themselves trailing by eight in the opening minutes of the first half. Eventually, the team found their groove offensively and closed the gap. The Pumas and Spartans exchanged baskets in the final minutes before the break but with no major runs, the teams went into halftime virtually tied, 22-23. The second half is when things began to shift for the Spartans. While the Pumas struggled to get their shots to drop, SPA saw solid play from all five players on the floor including excellent shooting from behind the arc and in the paint. With six minutes remaining, Cristo Rey tied things up again. Andrew Johnson was up for the challenge, however, hitting back-to-back threes to give the Spartans the lead, momentum, and, ultimately, the game. SPA had four players score in double digits and were led by their three senior starters Andrew Johnson, Ryan Moore, and Will Christakos.
Next up: The Spartans have now advanced to the Section 4AA Semifinals where they will play #2 St. Croix Prep on the Lion's home court. The game is on Tuesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. Go Spartans!
