On Thursday, March 7, SPA boy's basketball began their run in the Section 4AA Tournament. The team played St. Paul Washington Tech in the quarterfinals and won with a resounding final score of 82-50.
The Spartans were slow out of the gate and were quickly trailing in the opening minutes. The team fought back and closed the gap thanks to solid play by senior forward Ryan Moore and three-point shooting by sophomore point guard Adam Holod. Eventually, the team regained the lead and built a 12-point advantage going into halftime. Senior guard Andrew Johnson was a force on the offensive and defensive side in the second-half; his three-point shooting and game-high five steals helped the Spartans push the lead up to 20. Washington tried to ramp up the pressure with a press but the Spartans were too much to handle as they walked away with a 32 point victory.
Holod finished the game with 21 points and Andrew Johnson added 16 points of his own. The highlight of the night, however, was Ryan Moore scoring a career-high 30 points to go along with 17 rebounds in the final home game for the Spartan seniors.
Fortunately, the journey is not over for the boys' basketball team. The section tournament will continue for the Spartans with an away game at Cristo Rey Jesuit on Monday, March 11 (note day and time change due to this weekend's weather) in a SPA/Cristo Rey rematch of last year's Section Quarterfinal. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. Go Spartans!
