On Saturday, March 10, the #7 seeded boys' basketball team upset #2 Cristo Rey Jesuit to advance to the Section 4AA Semifinals.
The Spartans got off to a quick start with two back-to-back buckets by senior Gus Grunau and junior forward Ryan Moore. Cristo Rey answered back and the game remained close until halftime. In the second half, SPA found their rhythm quickly and broke the game open. The Spartans pushed their lead to 20 points thanks to some tough defense and some lights-out shooting from Gus Grunau. Cristo Rey ramped up the pressure late in the game, but the Spartans were too far ahead. The team won 74-61 and advanced to the Semifinals.
Gus Grunau had his best scoring game of the season, finishing the game with 34 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. Ryan Moore earned a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and senior forward Nik Elsaesser did a little bit of everything, finishing with 5 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. Finally, sophomore forward Liam Will came through in crunch time as he knocked down some clutch free throws late in the game to help secure the Spartans victory.
SPA will play their next section game on Tuesday, March 13, against #3 New Life Academy. The game will be held at St. Paul Washington Technical High School; tip-off is at 7:45 p.m. Go Spartans!
