On Thursday, March 8, Spartans Boys' Basketball defeated Nova Classical Academy, 71-56, to keep their season alive and push their winning streak to eight games.
The Spartans found themselves trailing early as they struggled to get their shots to drop in the opening minutes of the game. Junior forward Ryan Moore helped the Spartans cut away at the lead with solid post play in the paint. Senior forward Nik Elsaesser also gave the Spartans some much-needed momentum as he went coast to coast and knocked down a layup at the buzzer to cut the lead to 6 at halftime. In the second half, SPA came out firing and quickly took control of the game. They ramped up the pressure on defense and the team's shots finally started to fall as they pushed their lead into double digits. Freshman guard Adam Holod came up big with his highest scoring game of the season, finishing with seven three-pointers and 23 points. Senior guard Gus Grunau also had a big night with 22 points and junior forward Ryan Moore added 20 points of his own to round out the balanced scoring attack. It was another great win for the Spartans, especially for Seniors Nik Elsaesser and Gus Grunau, who received a standing ovation as they were subbed out in the final minute of their last home game at SPA!
The Spartans will head into their second round of the Section 4AA tournament on Saturday, March 10 as they face off against #2 Cristo Rey Jesuit at Minneapolis Washburn High School at 1 p.m. Go Spartans!
