On Thursday, September 7, Spartan boys' soccer traveled to Breck for a match under the lights.
SPA opened the scoring early with a goal from junior captain Eric Lagos in the third minute. For the rest of the first half, the Mustangs dominated possession while the Spartans defended their goal with concentration. Junior goalkeeper Ryan Moore had a great save in the 20th minute that kept the Spartans ahead.
In the second half, the Mustangs continued to control the possession but the Spartans were dangerous on several early counter attacks. With nine minutes remaining, freshman forward Milo Waltenbaugh won the ball at midfield and burst into the Mustangs half with vigor but his run was halted when he was fouled from behind. Lagos stepped up and hit a curling free kick off the bottom of the crossbar and into the goal from 25 yards out. The Spartans defended staunchly for the remainder and nearly scored a third goal as junior forward William Welsh won the ball and made a dynamic run into the Mustangs penalty box. He was fouled as well but the ref gave a foul at the edge of the penalty area which Michael Forsgren hit into the wall of defenders as the final seconds wound down on the clock.
SPA will take on White Bear Lake this weekend. Game is on Saturday, September 9 at 7 p.m. at White Bear Lake High School (South Campus) at 5 p.m. Go Spartans!
