Spartan girls' soccer extinguishes Visitation Blazers with 2-1 victory
Posted 08/30/2016 09:35AM

On Monday, August 29, SPA girls' soccer faced its second Section 3A opponent in three days. The team took on their long-time rivals, the Visitation Blazers, and prevailed 2-1.

Senior attacker Lauren Hansen opened the scoring in the first half, putting the Spartans up 1-0 going into the break. In the second half, the Spartans doubled their lead when senior midfielder Ella Matticks sliced the Blazer defense in half with a through ball that sent a streaking Kate Bond '17 to goal. The Visitation keeper did well to get a hand on Bond's finish but her far post placement was not to be denied. Visitation responded with one late-game goal but the strong, SPA defensive unit, led by goalkeeping tandem Belle Smith '18 and Emma Sampson '19, shut the door on any bid for a comeback.

Next up: The Spartans will hit the road on Tuesday, August 30 to meet their neighbor St. Paul Highland. Game starts at 6 p.m. -- Go Spartans!
