Over the weekend of November 30, SPA traveled to Eagan High School for the JV/Novice State Tournament, which featured 389 entries from 59 schools. The competition was divided into two separate competitions: JV and novice.
In the novice division (first year), at the end of the first five debates, SPA held the first (Jack Hlavka and Per Johnson), second (Will Anderson and Spencer Burris-Brown), and fourth (Isabella Tunney and Ceci Watson) seeds. The contest then moved into the elimination rounds. In addition to the three teams listed above, the Spartans also qualified the teams of Davyd Barchuk and Sam Zelazzo, and Ellie Dawson-Moore and Nafisa Hagi-Aden to the elimination rounds. Four Spartan pairs remained going into the Round of 16 and, ultimately, Jack and Per won the final round and were crowned champions. The pair had a stunning overall tournament record of 11-0. In individual judge speaking ratings for the tournament, Nafisa was first, Isabella was second, and Ellie was sixth.
In the JV division, the teams Maya Choi and Liam Lynch, Henry Hoeglund and Michael Moran, and Isabel Medrano and Rashmi Raveendran all reached the elimination rounds. Henry and Michael reached the quarterfinals but were eliminated just two rounds short of the championship. For individual speaking ratings, Maya was the sixth-ranked speaker.
Congratulations to all!
