On Friday, November 2, the #1 SMB Wolfpack (the cooperative football team between SPA, Blake, and Minnehaha Academy) hosted the Section 5AAAA Final at their home stadium against the #6 seeded Benilde-St. Margaret (BSM) team.
The game started slowly, with neither team scoring in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the BSM Knights got on the board first with a 7-yard touchdown run and extra point to go up 7-0. BSM didn't stay ahead for long, however; the Wolfpack evened the score three minutes later on a 32-yard touchdown throw and extra point. Things then quickly swung in the Wolfpack's favor. The team doubled down on their score with a second touchdown pass from the talented Wolfpack quarterback Jalen Suggs (Minnehaha) and they earned a 2-point safety on a fumble recovery. The score remained 16-7 until midway through the fourth quarter when the Knights marched down the field and scored on another running touchdown to tighten the game, 14-16. BSM gave it all they had in the last final minutes of the game but it would the Wolfpack who would stay strong and ultimately earn the Section title.
With the win, the SMB Wolfpack advance to the Class 4A State Tournament for the first time in program history! The team's first game of the state tournament will be on Friday, November 9 at 7 p.m. at St. Cloud State University against the Delano Tigers.
