As of Wednesday, October 31, SPA has four fall athletic teams/individuals still competing in postseason competitions. Read more below and join us in your blue and gold as we finish out a strong fall season!
Boys' and girls' cross country competed in the Section 4A meet on October 25 at Battle Creek Regional Park. Both teams had great outings, recording several personal- and season-best times. The highlight of the day, however, was Maddy Breton '20 qualifying to represent the Spartans as an individual in the Class A State Meet. The State Meet will take place at St. Olaf College in Northfield on Saturday, November 3. Good luck, Maddy and go Spartans!
The SMB Wolfpack (a co-op between SPA, Minnehaha, and Blake) competed in their first round of the Section 5AAAA tournament on Saturday, October 27 and scraped out a win over a tough #4 Orono team, 19-15. For three quarters, the Orono defense kept the high-powered offense of the Wolfpack at bay. After averaging 33 points per game during an undefeated regular season, the Wolfpack struggled to move the ball and found themselves trailing the Spartans 15-6 early in the fourth quarter. Facing a two-score deficit, the Wolfpack's quarterback placed a perfect pass in the hands of junior receiver Craig McDonald to complete a 65-yard touchdown with 10 minutes remaining. Two plays later, Orono's quarterback was flushed out of the pocket and intercepted at his own 22-yard line. With good field position, the Wolfpack needed just four plays to score the go-ahead touchdown with 7:57 remaining. The Orono offense had two more cracks at a potential game-winning drive but were unable to finish.
The #1 SMB Wolfpack will play in the Section 5AAAA Finals against #6 Benilde-St. Margaret on Friday, November 2 for a chance to advance to the state tournament for the first time in program history. Join us at The Blake School (Hopkins campus) for the 7 p.m. kick-off -- Go Wolfpack!

On Tuesday, October 30, the #4 SPA volleyball team faced off against #5 St. Croix Lutheran in their first round of the Section 4AA tournament. The Section Quarterfinals were hosted on the Spartans home court and featured fierce competition from both teams looking to extend their season.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the first set but the Crusaders fought back to quickly tie the set 9-9. SPA continued to battle and would eventually pull away for a 25-19 first set victory. The Spartans continued to carry the momentum into the second set with great energy and defensive intensity from the entire team. This ferocity led to a 25-19 win and a 2-0 lead. In the third set, SPA took another early lead. St. Croix Lutheran took their final time-out with SPA leading 23-18 and mounted a strong comeback pulling to within one at 23-22 before a nice kill by junior Arie Walker gave the Spartans match point. The Crusaders pulled to within one again with a nice kill but a service error by the Crusaders gave SPA the match point, 25-23.
The 3-0 win sends SPA to the Section 4AA Semifinals for the second year in a row where they will face #1 Concordia Academy - Roseville. Join us for the game on Thursday, November 1 at Concordia at 7 p.m. -- Go Spartans!
