Posted 09/06/2018 04:07PM

As SPA's award-winning publication teams begin another year of content production, the publication staffs received word they earned three awards from the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) to add to their accolades. The NSPA Critiques honor publications that are excelling in the field, as well as provide feedback for continued growth. The highest honor you can receive is an "All-American" award. This award means you've earned all four marks of distinction, leading publications across the country in every category. In this category, SPA earned two honors:

Iris: Art and Literature | All American w/Marks of Distinction in every category
(Writing and Editing, Photography/Art/Graphics, Design, and Concept)
  • In the critique, which praised both the writing and artwork, the judges wrote, "This year's Iris is a creative and uniform publication" and noted that the deck of cards is a truly "creative concept."
The Rubicon - All American w/Marks of Distinction in every category
(Coverage/Content, Text, Visuals, Presentation, and Online/Social Media)
  • The judges celebrated that "Overall, this is an outstanding publication," with content that is "strong, professional, and detail-oriented."
SPA also earned a First Class award which indicates exceptional work and is the next top award in the NSPA Critiques competition. In that category, SPA earned:
Ibid Yearbook - First Class Honor Rating
  • About the Ibid's storytelling style, the judges wrote, "Kudos, Ibid staff! You've put together a truly remarkable publication. Your readers should be thrilled with the coverage."

NSPA critiques are not directly linked to the infamous NSPA Pacemaker awards but generally, publications that win Pacemakers also receive All-American rankings because they are not only exceptional across the board in terms of journalistic standards, but also innovation.

Good luck to the SPA Publications staffs as they use these awards as motivation to continue to raise the bar and break new ground!
