Advanced Science and Technology students earn 10 awards at Minnesota State Science Fair

On April 9-10, Upper School Advanced Science Research and Advanced Technology Projects students participated in the Minnesota State Science Fair. All ten SPA participants earned their spot at State by qualifying at the Regional Fair held in March 2018.

At the State Fair, students presented their projects to judges and community members, fielded questions on their methods and results, and submitted their research papers for review. At the end of competition, SPA students had accumulated 11 awards, including four "Grand" awards from the Minnesota Academy of Sciences (the group who hosts the fair):

    • Flannery Enneking-Norton '18
  • 2018 Presidential Award (paper) for the Life Sciences:

  • 4th place Junior Science Humanities Symposium North Central Region:
    • Sorcha Ashe '18
  • American Fisheries Society Aquatic Science Award of Excellence:
    • Elsa Runquist '18
  • Science Museum of Minnesota Best Exhibit Award:
    • Michael Hall '18 and Daniel Ellis '18

Next up is the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), widely regarded as the most prestigious science competition for high school students in the nation. SPA swept both ISEF project spots available at the Regional Science Fair last month: Michael Hall '18 and Daniel Ellis '18 will advance with their project, "CARL: A Convolutional Neural Network Powered Self Driving Car," and Flannery Enneking-Norton '18 will advance with her project, "Confirming the facilitative relationship between Lumbricidae and Rhamnus cathartica."
