While many SPA students were enjoying time off for Spring Break, SPA's award-winning publications continued to rake in national honors.

First up was a trip to New York City for the Columbia Scholastic Press Association National Journalism Convention. At the convention, SPA's student newspaper The Rubicon was awarded a Gold Crown award, the highest recognition given by the CSPA, an affiliate of the Columbia School of Journalism. This is SPA's fourth year as a Crown winner and first year as a Gold Crown recipient. The Rubicon was one of three Minnesota schools to earn a Crown, and the only Gold Crown winner from the state.

Crown Awards honor top student publications chosen from CSPA’s members and are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. During Gold and Silver Crown consideration, publications are judged on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage, and writing.

In addition to the prestigious Gold Crown Award, 23 student journalists were named to the National Scholastic Press Association's Journalism Honor Roll over break. Students qualify for the honor roll by participating in student-journalism for at least two years and maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5. SPA's Director of Publications Kathryn Campbell also requires students to have served in a leadership position in order to qualify for the honor roll. NSPA Honor Roll honorees include:
