On Tuesday, February 13, #1 seeded St. Paul United began their playoff run in the Section 4A tournament with a game against #4 Simley. The United defeated Simley 5-0 and advanced to the Section Final.
Th Section Semifinal game started slow with both teams scoreless in the first and no shots-on-goal by the opposing Spartans. Simley took its first shot of the game in the second period when a forward broke free for a breakaway against United goaltender Jillian Oncay who made a big stop to keep the game scoreless. SPA's Hayley Hoffmann '18 opened the scoring in the middle of the second period, burying a rebound in front of the net to take the 1-0 lead. Sophia Michalski would extend United's lead to two, as she scored her third goal of the season tapping in a Hoffmann rebound. In the third period, SPU added three more goals, including another from Hoffmann. The final score was 5-0.
Next up: With the victory, St. Paul United advanced to the Section 4A Finals. The team will play for a chance to advance to State for the third year in a row on Thursday, February 15. The game is against #2 South St. Paul at 7 p.m. at Doug Woog Arena.
