On Wednesday, February 7, SPA Alpine traveled to Wild Mountain for the Section 4 postseason meet. The race featured a tight field of talented racers and moderate temperatures for an exciting day of racing.
The section competition features both individual and team qualifications. As a team, SPA's girls' team continued their late-season push and had a strong day; the team placed 3rd of 20 teams and narrowly missed state qualification (top two teams advance to the State). The boys' team finished 10th of 20 teams.
Individually, each section awards participation in the state tournament to the top ten individual finishers who are not already competing with the top two qualifying teams. The Spartans' Bailey Donovan '19 had a strong outing and finished 2nd in the girls' competition, which was good enough to qualify her to State as an individual for the third consecutive year. Senior Tom Patterson and freshman Julia Scott also had impressive races. Unfortunately, the pair missed the requirement for advancement in this category by milliseconds (Patterson was 0.9 seconds out of qualifying position and Scott was a mere 0.3 seconds).
Next up: The MSHSL State Alpine Ski Meet is at Giant's Ridge on Wednesday, February 14. Donovan has been an all-state finisher the last two years. According to Head Alpine Coach Liesel Schultz, "Bailey's grit, determination, and power should make it an exciting day of racing."
Go Bailey and go Spartans!
