Spartan Day Camp

Join us this summer for our full-day Spartan Day Camp! Campers entering grades K-3 at any Twin Cities school will enjoy summer fun with SPA faculty and staff on our beautiful Goodrich Campus. Each week will have a different theme (see below) and will also take advantage of all your favorite spaces, including games and sports in the gym, activities in our Makerspace, projects in our art studios, and plenty of outdoor playtime on the fields and playground. Spartan Day Camp runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the option for After Camp programming from 3-5:30 p.m. We offer five one-week sessions of Spartan Day Camp during the weeks of June 17 & 24 and July 8, 15, and 22: join us for one week, all five weeks, or any combination. Lego Knights (Grades 5-8)

Calling all banners! LEGO Knights is a morning camp where students will learn about some of the fundamentals of robotics engineering and programming while practicing the Core Values of the First LEGO League. Students will compete in a series of challenges throughout the week that will test their creativity, teamwork, and planning. They will become a part of one of four teams and design their own flags, logos, and style white they prepare for drag races and delivery runs. This camp can serve as a great entry point into LEGO robotics or be an opportunity to refine skills they already have.

Dive into the rich tradition of papermaking and bookbinding where you'll learn the secrets of transforming raw plant fiber into exquisite sheets of paper. Unleash your creativity as you experiment with textures, colors, patterns in various paper arts: water marbling, dying, printing, and more! We will also learn various book binding techniques to build a final Coptic Book Project. Students will come away with a variety of beautiful handmade papers, stab-stitch books, and a final hand-made, hardcover coptic sketchbook/journal.

Model Bridge Building! (Grades 4-6)

Let's build bridges! Bridges are all around us. Have you ever really stopped to think about what it takes to build them? Using some of our local bridges as inspiration, you will spend the week solving bridge-building challenges. Using a variety of given materials, you will need to research, plan, design, create, test, and adapt until you have created your best bridge. After a few days of playing, exploring, and discovering, your final challenge will be to design the lightest, strongest balsa wood bridge possible. Bring your design thinking and your engineering skills and be ready for a whole lot of fun.

El Encuentro: Spanish Immersion Camp (Grades 4-7)

Dive into the Spanish language organically through interactive games, storytelling, and immersive activities. This immersion camp focuses on building confidence using Spanish to communicate in diverse situations. From lunchtime conversations to recreational activities, each experience is designed to help students feel comfortable and confident speaking the language. Therefore, students of all skill-levels are welcome to join us for this immersive experience exploring the rich histories, cultures, art, and stories of various Latin American cultures.

During this week-long workshop, you will learn to play (or hone your skills) in a game of storytelling and roleplaying, the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game. You can play a chivalrous knight, flashy swashbuckler, mysterious sorceress, or devious thief (or just about anything else you dream up) overcoming challenges using your imagination, your character’s powers, and the luck of the dice. You will learn the rules of the game, how to create unique characters, and how to take on the role of the Game Master, creating exciting adventures for your peers. Whether you've never played before or consider yourself a master storyteller, everyone is welcome.

Upper School

Collaborative Leadership Institute (Grades 10-12)

Effective group leadership begins with knowing one's own strengths and recognizing and getting the most out of the strengths of others. This one-week workshop is built around developing an understanding of oneself as a leader and as a member of a group. Mornings focus on theory and research, challenging students to explore their own strengths as well as working to understand and assess group dynamics and task needs in a casual, seminar-style setting with activities and discussions. In the afternoons, students will apply these lessons to group challenges that get them out in the community and practicing their leadership skills. Combining experiential learning with a theoretical approach, students will end the week with strategies for collaborative endeavors as well as an understanding of their own strengths and talents. It’s intended to be fun and challenging at the same time. No homework, but you’ll have plenty of food for thought as the lessons build on one another and the tasks demand increasing attention to all the areas of group and self-dynamics we explore. A certificate of participation will be given to students on their final day.

Music Workshop: Songwriting (Grades 10-12)

Explore the basics of songwriting. We will examine traditional forms like the blues, folk songs, gospel, and ballads, and look at how they serve as the foundations for so many modern popular songs of today. We will learn how to listen critically by engaging with songs we like and songs we dislike, asking what inspires our strong reactions. Each day, you’ll follow prompts to generate elements of a song (melody, harmony, lyrics, arrangement) and practice bringing these elements together by setting old texts to new music, writing new lyrics for old music, arranging the same song in several different styles, and seeing what it’s like to write with a partner. You will finish the week with a few songs in hand, and the confidence to keep writing.

History 101: Age of Revolutions (Grades 7-9)

Students will learn about various revolutions that occured during the "Age of Revolutions" (1770s-1840s). What started in the 13 colonies with the American Revolution inspired countries overseas to make significant political, social, and cultural changes as well. Students will study these events through interactive and hands-on lessons.

This is a Chinese language and culture class teaching kids to cook and create Chinese art. Kids will learn the basics for making 5 chinese dishes: dumplings, scallion pancakes, biang noodles, Mapo tofu and fried rice. In the afternoon each day, kids will create calligraphy related to the dishes they cooked. The group will learn the basics of preparation, the names of ingredients, the etymology of characters, and some skills related to composition, structure and style. Students will vote to turn their best work into 3-D printed stickers and/or t-shirt logos. Week 1 is offered to students with no previous Chinese language experience. Crash Course: Medieval Times (Grades 7-9)

Students will explore various topics of the Middle Ages in this interactive and hands-on camp. We will be learning about different facets of life as someone living in this time period, as well as major historical events.

Music Workshop: Music Production & Recording (Grades 8-12)

Learn how to record and produce your own music with Mr.Kraack! In this one-week course, campers will use the online recording software Soundtrap to learn how to produce music in different genres using loops, samples, and newly recorded sounds. Aimed at beginners and dabblers alike, participants will end the week with a collection of original songs to share with friends and family as well as the tools to continue producing their own music!

Writing Workshop: Poetry (Grades 8-12)

Spend a week exploring new ways to write a poem! We will employ unusual methods such as cut-ups, erasures, and other language games, to break through writer’s block and make surprising discoveries. We will get lost in the library, and employ chance operations (like flipping coins and rolling dice) to discover startling new patterns, inspirations, and meanings in our writing. At the end of the week, you will have a toolbox full of new tricks and a folder full of strange new poems.

Drama Workshop: Find Your Clown (Grades 7-10)

Welcome to the camp where failure is success, mistakes are welcome, and laughs trump all. In this camp, students will explore the rich history of clowning and learn techniques in playing the fool for audiences. Campers can expect to find their own unique clown characters through games, skill-building, and performance exercises culminating in a clown show. Come and spend a week learning how to listen to your audience, explore creative improvisation, and develop fully-realized clown personae in this week of drama and laughter!

Drama Workshop: Building Character, Puppets & Object Theater (Grades 7-10)

Enter the world of puppetry through hands-on instruction in making, operating, and crafting performance. This program will combine technical construction training and performance techniques for several types of puppets. Rangning from shadow puppets to marionettes, the program will expose campers to several forms of using objects and constructing characters to tell stories onstage. Campers can expect to walk away with multiple unique puppet creations as well as the skills to construct their own object-based performances.
