1990: Cross Country Wins State Title

 

Starting in 1990, the Spartan boys’ cross country team kicked-off a notable era for running at SPA. The team captured the State Championship in 1990, 1991, and 1992 for this fall sport.

1990: Lagos Brothers and Sanneh Continue Soccer Stardom

Following their outstanding careers at SPA, Gerard Lagos '88, Manny Lagos '90, and Tony Sanneh '90 would all go on to play collegiate soccer at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and then professionally. Sanneh would join the U.S. National Team where he played in 43 international games and also played in the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

1991: Spartans Soccer Takes the Title

Spartan boys soccer program continues to dominate, winning the Minnesota State Soccer Championship in 1991 and again in 1994.

1993: Fencing Powerhouse

Throughout the late 1980s and well into the 1990s, Spartan Fencing reigned supreme. In the span of 10 years, the team won the Minnesota State Championship an impressive six times: 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1995, and 1998.

1993: Track and Field Races for the State Trophy

In 1993, the Spartan boys’ track and field program claimed the Minnesota State Track and Field Championship.

1994: Leo Cullen '94 Named Top U.S. Soccer Player

In 1994, Leo Cullen '94 was named national soccer player of the year by Parade Magazine. Cullen was selected out of a pool of 35 All-American high school soccer players from across the United States. Parade’s panelists cited Cullen’s skill, leadership, and teamwork. Cullen served as co-captain his senior year and ended the season with 14 goals. 

1994: Bancroft Reaches the South Pole

Ann Bancroft '74 topped a lifetime of endurance and exploration by reaching the South Pole by ski on January 14, 1993 becoming the first woman to travel overland to both poles.

1994: Girls Soccer Wins State Runner-up 

During the 1994-1995 year, girls soccer wins the Section AAAA Championship and qualified for the MSHSL State Tournament where the team finished in second place to wrap-up an incredible season.

1996: MacDonald Scores 1,000 Points

During his senior season on the boys' basketball team, Eric MacDonald '96 achieved the milestone of scoring 1,000 points during his time at St. Paul Academy and Summit School.

1997: Girls' Swimming Sets Records

During the 1997 girls' swimming season, the co-op team would finish the season undefeated, clinching the conference title. The team would also send its largest number of athletes to State Sections in the program's history, setting set five program records, finishing 11th out of 50 teams at the State Meet, and setting two of the program records in the meet’s 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

1998: Cross Country Programs Setting Records

During the 1998 cross country season, both the boys' and girls' programs realized conference titles, placed second at State Sections, and made appearances at State Meets. This was also the fourth consecutive state appearance for the girls’ team.
