Spartan Fall 2021 Preview: Cross Country, Football, Soccer, Swim & Dive, Tennis, and Volleyball

The 2021 Fall Athletic Season began on August 16, 2021.  Read more about our Fall 2021 teams and see their upcoming contests below!

Girls’ Cross Country

Coming off of an IMAC Conference Championship and a Section 4A appearance, Spartan Cross Country has a lot to be excited about for the 2021 season.  The team returns IMAC champion, Inga Wing ‘25, as well as All-Conference performers, Carys Hardy ‘24 and Taylor Barkwell ‘25 and All-Conference Honorable Mention honoree, Maren Overgaard ‘26.

Boys’ Cross Country

New Cross Country Coach Gary Perry is excited about the potential of the Boys’ Spartan Cross Country team for the 2021 season.  The team returns a lot of young talent that got great experience running in the IMAC last season.  Perry is excited to have an opportunity to develop this young talent and create a winning culture with the SPA cross country program.

Football

The SMB Wolfpack, a cooperative program between SPA, Minnehaha Academy, and The Blake School looks forward to what will be a more traditional high school football season.  The team is excited about the return of Captain Charlie Johnson ‘22 after an injury sidelined him last season.  The team is also looking to All-Conference Honorable Mention performers Joey Stolpestad ‘23 and Judah Thomas ‘22 for major contributions this season.

Boys’ Soccer

Spartan Boys' Soccer is coming off a solid 2020 season in which they improved in every game. The team returns a deep roster of experienced players, including Senior Captains Leo Larson ‘22 and Mac Brown ‘22, as well as All-Conference Honorable Mention honorees Nate Cohen ‘23 and Zekiah Juliusson ‘22. The Spartans are looking forward to a very competitive conference season as well as competing in a new Section 3A this year!

Girls’ Soccer

The Girls’ Soccer team will look to channel their hard work and off-season improvement into more victories this season.  Expectations are high as the team had great wins last season over Providence Academy and Breck, as well as ties against challenging Minneapolis Southwest and Mounds Park Academy teams.  The team returns All-Conference performer Naomi Straub ‘22, and All-Conference Honorable Mention honoree Heidi Deuel ‘23.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving  (Co-Op)

The Sparks swimming and diving team, a co-op between SPA and Highland Park Senior High, is coming off of a strong season in 2020, where they won 5 of their 7 dual meets and finished second in the conference.  The team also returns Katherine Welsh ’22 who won the one-meter diving contest with the best diving score in recent team history and the fifth-highest section score of all Class AA divers!

Girls’ Tennis

Spartan Tennis was a force to be reckoned with last season, finishing the season with an 8-2 regular-season record.  The team returns All-Conference performers, Elizabeth Trevathan ‘22 and Maggie Fields ‘22 and All-Conference Honorable Mention honoree Leni Nowakowski ‘23 for the 2021 season.

Volleyball

In what was a rebuilding year in 2020, Spartan Volleyball focused on mastering fundamentals and establishing their rhythms as a team.  The 2021 team will build on that experience and will also look to All-Conference honoree Solvej Eversoll ‘23 as a team leader.
