Artist Statement

My artwork takes a critical role of beauty in society today. People’s bodies are often taken for granted and certain individuals are labeled beautiful and some as ugly. Often referring to my own experiences as a latino-asian with beauty standards, my work explores the varying relationships between the standard or expectation and reality. Having engaged subjects as diverse as weight, makeup, and clothing styles my work reproduces familiar visual signs, arranging them into a miniature collection of photographs. While I photograph a variety of fields and activities in each project my methodology is consistent. Although there may not always be environmental similarities between the different projects they are linked by language and critization of society. My project consists of multiple works, in a range of different activities, grouped around a specific theme of beauty. “Because this is who I am” is a project that will hopefully provoke a participant to question how beauty standards influence their way of life.
