Spartan Winter Season Update

Spartan Winter Season Update

It's been a fantastic season for our winter teams! See below for mid-season updates on all our varsity Spartans, and visit Team Pages for information about upcoming games and meets. Go Spartans!

Alpine Skiing: SPA Alpine has had a strong season thus far with great performances at each meet. In their third IMAC meet of the year last week, Caden Burns '25 and Henry Giles '24 finished first and second overall, and Caden has been a medalist in every IMAC Conference meet this season. The girls’ team has been led by sisters Evy ‘26 and Maya ‘23 Sachs.

Boys' Basketball: With an impressive 10-3 overall record so far, Head Coach Kevin Keto is excited about where his team is at this point in the season. The team's most recent victory was a 55-37 win over Trinity, and the Spartans' balanced lineup and team approach has served them well this season, with Ethan Carter ‘24, Tysen Hayes ‘24, and Mikkel Rawdon ‘24 all averaging double figures and Ethan earning the IMAC Athlete of the Month award for December.

Girls' Basketball: The girls have spent the 2022-23 season focusing on improving their skills individually and as a team. In a tough IMAC conference, the team is 2-10 with two big wins on the season: 48-36 over Math & Science Academy and 45-29 over Nova Classical. Captains Catherine Hooley ‘23, Naomi Kempcke ‘24, and Ivy Raya ‘23 will continue to lead a relatively young team that will only improve as the season progresses.

Fencing: It's been another strong year for SPA fencing, with the Spartans consistently placing high in meets. At the team's most recent meet, Halle Cowgill ‘24 placed first in women’s saber and Rowan Moore ‘26 placed sixth. In women’s epee, Belle Weng ‘25 placed seventh and Annie Zhang ‘25 placed eighth. In men’s saber, Will Moran ‘23 placed first, Soren Miller '23 placed sixth and Roberto Velez ‘23 placed eighth. Finally, in men’s epee, Milan Mishra ‘25 placed fourth and Maik Nguyen ‘24 placed seventh. With one more regular season meet remaining, Head Coach Sasha Pai anticipates that the team will look to improve their seeding for the state fencing tournament at the end of February.

Boys' Hockey: Boys’ hockey has been battle-tested so far this season and Head Coach Bill McClellan believes that some of the team’s best hockey is still ahead of them. Notable victories this season include a 3-1 victory over IMAC rival Breck and a 5-1 win over St. Paul Johnson. At 8-8 overall, Coach McClellan will continue to rely on veteran player and captain George Peltier '23 who is second in total goals (6), fourth in assists (5), and third in points (11).

Girls' Hockey: The Phoenix, a new girls' hockey co-op with players from SPA, Burnsville, Faribault, Faribault Bethlehem Academy, DeLaSalle, and St. Agnes is currently 7-14. Spartan athletes have performed exceptionally well on the cooperative team: Ella Bond ‘26 is second on the team in total goals (11), assists (9), and points (20) and Charlotte Goings ‘24 is third on the team in goals (6), first in assists (10), and third in points (16). Greta Magnuson '23 has also been stellar in the net, saving 88% of shots on goal.

Nordic Skiing: Spartan Nordic is having another exceptional season with no shortage of highlights. On the girls side, Inga Wing '25, Maren Overgaard  '26, Taylor Barkwell '25, and Eleanor Mody '27 swept the individual portion of their most recent meet finishing first, second, third and fourth. For the boys, Captains Andrew Drake '24 and Jack O'Brien '23 have paced the Spartans, finishing in the top thirty in their most recent meet. SPA's girls' nordic ski won the IMAC Conference Championship on Wednesday, February 1 at Theodore Wirth Park. The victory was a true team effort for the Spartans who secured first place in the relay events after sweeping the top three spots on the podium. SPA was led by Taylor Barkwell '25 who placed first and was also named the 2023 Girls' IMAC Champion! Other scoring skiers in the top 10 included Paloma Good '27 in 2nd place, Alyda Overgaard '28 in 3rd place, and Johanna Pierach '25 in 7th place. In the team relays, SPA captured first place in both boys' and girls' events. Congratulations to the teams of Jack O'Brien '23/Thomas Kovarik '25 and Maren Overgaard '26/Helen Townley '25 who defended their relay title.

Boys' Swim & Dive: Boys’ swim and dive, a co-op between SPA and Highland Park, has competed in four meets around the metro area so far this season and has put in strong performances at each one. The Trojans are currently 3-1, are led by three SPA co-captains: Gabriel Bangoura '23, Tenzin Bawa '23, and Dylan Tan Stephenson ‘23. The team is looking forward to defending their 2022 Conference Championship at St. Catherine's University on Saturday, February 11.
