The 2021-22 winter athletics season is right around the corner! Here's a preview of our winter teams and the outlook for our Spartans.
Coming off a section semifinal appearance and a solid 9-8 record a year ago, expectations are high for boys' basketball this season. The team returns a strong core of student-athletes with valuable experience from last season and will rely heavily on All-Conference Honorable Mention honorees and twins Brandt Baskerville ‘22 and Clarke Baskerville ‘22 for leadership and experience as the season progresses.

SPA girls’ basketball will look to take a step forward this season. The team will be under new leadership as they welcome Minnesota Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, Willie Taylor as their new Head Coach. Coach Taylor is eager to develop the talent within his program and create a winning culture, and is excited about the possibilities of this group as they return the majority of their team, including All-Conference player Lindsay Browne ‘23, from a season ago.

Boys’ Hockey will enter the 2021-22 season looking to establish their identity as a team and refine their skills. The Spartans welcome new Head Coach Bill McClellan who will take over the program. Coach McClellan will look to build team talent and culture with the help of leaders Judah Thomas ‘22 and George Peltier ‘23 who each took home All-Conference Honorable Mention honors last season.

Girls' Hockey (Co-Op)
Coming off of a 10-9 record and a Section 6AA Quarterfinal appearance last season, Head Coach Daniel Berthiaume is excited about the possibilities of this year's squad as they return a strong nucleus of players for the 2021-22 season. Berthiaume says the team will rely on All-Conference performer Lucie Bond ‘22 and All-Conference Honorable mention honoree Charlotte Goings ‘24 all season long for consistent play and experience.

Alpine Head Coach Rob Thomas is looking forward to a full season after limited opportunities to compete in 2020-21. The team will be led by Henry Giles '24, who finished 4th at last year's section meet and 87th in the state. In addition to Giles, the team returns All-Conference performers Nikola Barkwell ‘23, Soren Mishra ‘23, and Will Sedo ‘22, and All-Conference Honorable mention honorees, Sophie Cullen ‘22, Clara Garner ‘22, and Wyatt Tait ‘23.

After an exceptional Nordic season in 2020-21, expectations are high for this year's team. Head Coach Max Lundgren will rely on Inga Wing '25, who led the team last season with a third-place finish at the Minnesota State meet, and teammate Helen Townley '25 who also placed in the top thirty, finishing 29th in the state overall. In addition to Wing and Townley, the Spartans return an experienced group of skiers including Taylor Barkwell ’25, Sila Liljedahl '23, Maren Overgaard '26, and Marie Schumacher ’22.

Boys' Swim & Dive (Co-Op)
After ending last season on a high note by placing third at the conference meet and fifth at sections, new Head Coach Dave Hanson is excited about the possibilities of this year’s team. The Trojans return captain, Pah Na '22 as well as Connor Overgaard ‘24 and Rishi Bhargava ‘24, who both took home All-Conference honors.
