The 2022 fall athletic season is underway and our student-athletes and coaches are gearing up for a great season! Read more below for a preview of each of our varsity teams and get ready to join us this fall to cheer on our Spartans.

Girls’ Cross Country

Coming off last season's fourth-place conference finish and an individual state meet appearance, Girls’ Cross Country has a lot to be excited about for the 2022 season. The team returns State and All-Conference performer, Taylor Barkwell ‘25 as well as All-Conference Honorable Mention honorees, Maren Overgaard ‘26 and Inga Wing ‘25.

Boys’ Cross Country

New Cross Country Coach Sophie Schmitz is excited about the potential of the Boys’ Spartan Cross Country team for the 2022 season. The team returns a lot of young talent with great IMAC experience from last season, and Schmitz is excited to have an opportunity to develop this young talent and grow the Spartan cross country program.

Football

The SMB Wolfpack, a cooperative program between SPA, Minnehaha Academy, and The Blake School looks forward to what should be another strong season after the team's 6-4 record in 2021. The team will look to senior captain and All-District Honorable Mention honoree Joey Stolpestad ‘23 and fellow senior captain Brody Rindelaub ‘23 for major contributions this season and leadership on and off the field.

Boys’ Soccer

Coming off an exceptional 2021 season in which they captured their first IMAC Conference title since 2015 and advanced to the section championship game, expectations for Spartan Boys' Soccer are high. The team returns a deep roster of experienced players, led by captain, All-State, and All-Conference honoree Cooper Bollinger Danielson '23, All-Conference Honorable Mention and fellow captain Yash Kshirsagar ‘23 and Ezra Straub ‘25, and senior captain Nathan Cohen ‘23.

Girls’ Soccer

After a stellar 2021 season that included a 15-2-1 overall record and winning the IMAC Conference Championship, expectations are again high for Girls' Soccer for the 2022 season. Led by All-State and All-Conference player Sawyer Bollinger Danielson '25, the team also returns All-Conference honorees, Heidi Deuel '23 and Annie Zhang '25 and All-Conference Honorable Mention athletes Maryeva Gonzalez '23 and Aurelia Meza '24.

Girls’ Swimming and Diving  (Co-Op)

New Head Coach Matt Peckham is excited about the potential of the Girls’ Swimming and Diving team this season. The Sparks team, a co-op between SPA and Highland Park Senior High, is coming off of a strong season in 2021, where they finished second in the Saint Paul City Conference with a 3-1-0 record and captured first, third, and fourth place at the IMAC Conference diving meet.

Girls’ Tennis

Girls’ tennis spent the 2021 fall season developing individually and collectively as a team. Notable victories for the year included victories over Highland Park, Academy of Holy Angels, and New Life Academy. The team returns All-Conference Honorable Mention honorees Naysa Kalugdan ‘23 and Leni Nowakowski ‘23 for the 2022 season.

Volleyball

In what was a rebuilding year in 2021, Spartan Volleyball focused on mastering fundamentals and establishing their rhythms as a team. Expectations are high for the 2022 season as the Spartans return six varsity players including All-Conference honoree and captain Solvej Eversoll ‘23, All-Conference Honorable Mention selection and captain Riley Erben ‘23, and captain Natalie Vogenthaler ‘24.
