Spartan Debate compete in State Tournament and earn 2021 MDTA Cup

Over the weekend of January 16, 2020, Spencer Burris-Brown '22, Jack Hlavka '22, Maya Sachs '23, and Henry Hilton '24 represented SPA at the 2021 MSHSL State Debate Tournament. The pair of Maya and Henry competed as true novices and had a good inaugural showing thanks to the mentorship of Spencer and Jack over winter break. Spencer and Jack also had a good outing, ending the tournament by breaking the quarterfinals and placing among the state's top finishers.

Next up for Spencer and Jack is the 2021 National Speech and Debate Tournament which will take place virtually in June 2021.

In addition to the state tournament, the SPA team was excited to be recognized this week with the Minnesota Debate Teachers Association Cup Public Forum. The MDTA Cup is the award given to the top-performing school in the state.

"This is a special award because it can't be won individually — it takes a strong team culture, with everyone working together," said Head Debate Coach Vincent Cheng. "I couldn't be more proud of SPA's debate team for stepping up during such a challenging year and continuing Tom Fone's legacy."
