Student Scientists Shine at 2026 Twin Cities Regional Science Fair

SPA students shined at the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair (TCRSF), with 20 competitors representing the school across advanced courses and independent studies. Ten students came from Karissa Baker’s Advanced Science Research (ASR) course, eight from Dr. Kate Lockwood’s Advanced Technology Projects (ATP) course, and two pursued independent research projects. Both ASR and ATP allow students to conduct original, independent research in their fields of interest.

“It was inspiring to see our students connect with peers across the metro area and showcase their research,” said Baker. Lockwood added, “By the time students reach these classes, they aren’t just learning science—they are practicing it, asking the right questions, and solving complex problems.”

SPA students presented innovative projects ranging from neural networks, gene transfer studies, and echocardiogram-based dementia prediction, to space debris tracking, plastic degradation research, and on-demand seizure suppression via sonogenetics.

Several students earned prestigious qualifications, including Regeneron ISEF Finalist Huxley Westemeier '26 and alternates Evan Morris '26 and Kaya Cayci '28, as well as 15 students qualifying for the Minnesota State Science and Engineering Fair.

Sponsored awards highlighted the range of student achievement, including the DuPont Water Solutions Award, TCRSF Inspiring Excellence Award, Regeneron Biomedical Science Award, and recognition from the US Air Force, Minnesota Space Frontier Society, and Yale Science and Engineering Award. From cutting-edge research to national recognition, SPA students continue to demonstrate their passion, creativity, and leadership in scientific innovation.
