Double Section championships for Spartan soccer as girls' and boys' soccer teams head to State

Tuesday, October 18 was a day for the Spartan history books as both the SPA girls' and boys' soccer teams were crowned Section 3A champions, sending both teams to the Class A State Soccer Tournament. In a remarkable double-header played at St. Thomas Academy on Tuesday night, the #1-seeded boys beat Minnehaha Academy 1-0 on a goal from senior captain Cooper Bollinger Danielson, followed by the #2-seeded girls beating Minnehaha 1-0 on a goal from sophomore Sawyer Bollinger Danielson.

The double Section championships cap off an extraordinary season for both teams. The boys finished their regular season with an 8-3-3 record and a #1 seed in Section 3A. In section play, the Spartans defeated Nova Classical 5-0 in the quarterfinals and St. Croix Lutheran Academy 4-0 in the semifinals, setting up an IMAC conference showdown against rival Minnehaha in the Section Championship game. The championship game was a nailbiter without a score for either team until Bollinger Danielson '23 put one into the right corner of the goal with four minutes left to secure the win and a ticket to State. This is the team's 18th appearance at State and the first time the boys' team has advanced to the State tournament since 2012.

The girls capped off their 6-5-3 regular season with the #2 seed in Section 3A. They marched through section competition, defeating Hiawatha Collegiate 8-0 in the quarterfinals and St. Croix Lutheran Academy 2-0 in the semifinals, setting up the double IMAC Conference showdown against Minnehaha Academy. The Spartans began the game strong with a quick goal from Bollinger Danielson '25 in the opening minutes of the match, and a stellar defensive effort against the Redhawks' tough front line was the key to the 1-0 victory and the Section crown. This is the girls' first appearance at State since 2016 and the team's 7th State tournament appearance overall.

Both the girls' and boys' Class A MSHSL State Soccer Tournaments will begin on Tuesday, October 25; seeding will be decided on October 22. Congratulations to both teams and go Spartans!
