Congratulations to The Rubicon/RubicOnline student newspaper which, under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Maddy Fisher ‘23 and Director Tommy Verhey ‘23 was named a Gold Crown winner in the hybrid (print and online) publication category. This is the publication's fourth Gold Crown and its ninth Crown award in nine years. Director of Publications Kathryn Campbell notes: "We enter the Hybrid category each year; it's the toughest, because the publication has to be consistently excellent in both print and online to be selected for a Crown," says Campbell, "The collaboration between our The Rubicon print and online staffs, and their dedication to doing good work transcends the medium in which they do it."
Additionally, Iris: Art + Lit won a Gold Crown for its 2023 art and literature magazine. Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Eliza Farley '24 and Hadley Dobish ‘25 and club co-president Poppy Ploen ‘24 this is the magazine's sixth crown award, and its fourth Gold Crown. Campbell also had these remarks about the gold award for Iris and Lit: "The staff took some significant creative risks last spring, to mixed results. We've had a lot of judge chatter about our AI-generated cover … but the Crown judges saw it as an early exploration of a ground-breaking tool thematically spot on."
The Crown Awards honor top student publications from around the country. Crowns are selected for overall excellence in a head-to-head comparison. During consideration, publications are judged by a panel of guest judges on their excellence as shown by their design, photography, concept, coverage, and writing.
