Rubicon Online named a 2024 Online Pacemaker Finalist

The Rubicon Online, the website for SPA’s student newspaper, has been named a Pacemaker finalist by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). This is the eighth year since 2016 that the site has been named a finalist in the Pacemaker competition, which is known as "the Pulitzer Prize of student journalism." The Rubicon Online is one of only 26 scholastic news sites from across the country to earn the Pacemaker finalist designation and the only Minnesota publication honored in the finalist list.

Student leaders include Director of RubicOnline Clara McKoy ‘24, Production Manager Eliana Mann '24, and Creative Design Manager Rita Li ‘24.

"As their adviser, I am consistently proud of the way our online journalists commit to innovation," Director of Publications, Kathryn Campbell says. "Whether it is embedding story recordings in their stories to increase accessibility or utilizing social media channels to broaden their readership or diving into videography to tell multimedia stories, the staff works hard to level up with every story they assign."

NSPA Associate Director Gary Lundgren said it best in the press release: “The judging teams will now continue to study the sites named as Pacemaker finalists on a frequent basis... so for the 26 schools we are naming as finalists today, the competition is still happening in real time.”

Pacemaker entries are judged by teams of professionals based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography, and graphics. The Pacemaker is NSPA's preeminent award and recognizes "the best of the best" in high school journalism. Congratulations to The Rubicon staff!
