SPA's Middle School arts and literary magazine, Art and Literature 2020, has been selected to receive the rank of "Excellent" in the 2020 NCTE Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) program. This is the highest honor in the REALM program, which is sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The mission of NCTE’s REALM program is to publicly recognize excellent literary magazines produced by students, with the goal of encouraging schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing.
The winning publication was produced during the 2019-20 school year and features both poetry and prose pieces authored by students in Grades 6-8. The publication also features images of student artwork including photography, drawings, paintings, and ceramics pieces. View the entire publication.
The pieces featured in the magazine were selected by two external judges: Andrea Carlson, a visual artist whose Anishinaabe (Ojibwe), French and Scandinavian heritage provides a rich foundation for her paintings; and Lauren Sergeant, a young-adult writer who is the author of the Glaring Dawn series. The magazine's advisor is Middle School science teacher Stacy Overgaard, who also advises the Middle School yearbook.
Congratulations to all our Art and Literature 2020 writers and artists!
