2020 Fall athletics off to strong start for cross country, soccer, girls' swim and dive, and girls' tennis teams

The 2020 Fall Athletic Season began on August 17 for SPA's cross country, soccer, girls' swimming and diving, and girls' tennis teams (due to COVID-19, the football and volleyball seasons have been moved to Spring 2021). Read more about our Fall 2020 teams and see a list of their upcoming contests below!

Cross Country

Spartan Cross Country will work to build off a successful 2019 campaign as they enter the 2020 season. The girls' team looks to improve upon last year's section runner-up finish and team state appearance after graduating only two seniors. The team will be led by seniors Isabel Toghramadjian, Addie Morrisette, and Mia Schubert, and will bring a nice mix of veteran leadership and youthful talent to the table. The boys' team will be led by senior captain Michael Moran, who turned in a top-35 finish at the 2019 state meet. This year, the boys added a few new upperclassmen to the mix that are sure to boost the competitiveness of the team.

Upcoming events

  • September 25 vs. Mounds Park and Minnehaha
  • September 26 vs Blake, Mounds Park, Breck, Minnehaha, Providence

Boys' Soccer

Boys' soccer started the fall season on the right foot with a 1-0 victory over Minneapolis South and a well-earned 0-0 draw against Holy Family Catholic. The team will see leadership from 10 members of the Class of 2021, including captains Jackson Biggs, who will lead the Spartans' defense as a goalkeeper, and Milo Waltenbaugh, who is a forward and will be a vital aspect of the team's offense. The team hopes their versatility will make them competitive among their IMAC rivals and beyond.

Upcoming events

  • September 22 vs. Blake
  • September 24 vs. Minnehaha Academy

Girls' Soccer

Under the leadership of senior captains Julia Baron, Izzy Medrano, and Olivia Lagos, the girls' varsity soccer team is excited about their prospects for the 2020 season. The Spartans hope to improve upon last year's regular-season record and to develop their individual and team skills. The team also hopes to push deeper into the postseason this year and, hopefully, beat the perennial rival Visitation team.

Upcoming events

  • September 22 vs. Blake
  • September 29 vs. Providence

Girls' Swimming and Diving

The Sparks, a co-op team with Highland Park Senior High School, begin their season with a very strong core of swimmers and divers who are looking to lead the team and make a run at the conference championship. The vast swimming depth allows opportunities for taking on everyone in the conference, and a couple of the team's divers are looking for a chance to make state and be competitive at that level. All of the team's meets will be held virtually this year with each team swimming at their home pool and reporting in times and finishes.

Upcoming events

  • September 25 vs. Harding
  • September 29 vs. Como

Girls' Tennis

Girls' tennis has earned three big wins to begin the 2020 fall season: the Spartans beat Washburn (6-1), Minnehaha Academy (5-2), and Mounds Park Academy (7-0). Given this winning steak, the Spartans are feeling confident going into the second half of their season, which will include three important conference matches against Blake, Breck, and Providence. SPA's varsity team is lead by seniors Maya Choi, Kate Hick, and Annika Rock. They are also excited to welcome some new, skilled younger players to the roster this season.

Upcoming events

  • September 22 vs. Providence
  • September 25 vs. Washburn
