Girls' Basketball (season complete)
Girls' basketball was seeded #6 in the Section 4AA tournament and played #11 St. Croix Prep in their first round of play. SPA beat the St. Croix Prep Lions earlier this month but unfortunately, the same would not be the same for this postseason matchup. SPA struggled to get their shots to fall against the hot-shooting St. Croix team in the first half and struggled with turnovers. In the second half, SPA stepped up their play and scored 21 points to the Lions 27 points but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit. The final score was 56-38.
Boys' Basketball (postseason in progress)
Spartan boys' basketball will begin to play in the Section 4AA tournament on Thursday, March 5. Girls' Hockey (season complete)
The St. Paul United girls' hockey program, a co-op between SPA and Visitation, was seeded #3 in the 2020 Section 4A tournament. The team began their postseason run on February 8 with a game against Minnehaha United, which the team won easily, 9-1. Next up was the Section Semifinal where SPU took on #2 Simley. Both teams struggled to get on the board in the first period but it would be the United who would find the back of the goal first after the break. The team then held on to the lead for the remainder of the game to advance to the Finals!
In the Section 4A Finals, United matched up against its perennial postseason rival, the South St. Paul Packers, on Thursday, February 13 at Doug Woog Arena. Despite a scoreless first period and good momentum in the second for United, the Packers snuck in a goal at the end of the second and another one in the third to end United's season.
Boys' Hockey (season complete)
The #7 seeded SPA boys' hockey team began play in the Section 4A Tournament on Wednesday, February 18 with a game against #10 St. Paul Highland - Central. The game started slowly and was tied at 1-1 after the first period. After the break, the Spartans found their stride and scored five unanswered goals to record a final score of 6-1.
In the Quarterfinal, the Spartans played #2 St. Paul Johnson at Phalen Arena. Despite being the underdogs, SPA controlled the game and led 3-0 going into the final period. The Johnson Governors did manage to find the back of the net a few times but not before the Spartans secured the victory (5-2) and advanced to the Section Semifinals.
On Wednesday, February 26, SPA took on #6 South St. Paul in the Section 4A Semifinals on for a chance to earn a spot in the Finals. The Spartans got on the board first with a goal by Jake Hosszu in the first 60 seconds of play (assisted by Will Schavee and Will Rathmanner) and maintained the lead going into the third period, 2-1, on a goal by Schavee. With the victory within reach, South St. Paul sent the game to overtime on a last-second goal, and in overtime, despite several close chances in three overtime periods, SPA's season came to an end when the Packers scored an even-strengthened goal 4 minutes into the third overtime.
Nordic Skiing (season complete)
On Tuesday, February 4, Spartan Nordic Skiing competed in Sections and qualified one student-athlete for State. Congratulations to seventh-grader Inga Wing who had an excellent pursuit race and earned her place at the MSHSL State Meet with an 11th place finish! Other highlights from the day included seniors Lauren Dieperink and Sophia Heegaard giving it their all in their final high school race; juniors Anthony Chen and Jonas Bray placing 32nd and 44th, respectively; and seventh-graders Taylor Barkwell and Helen Townley giving a preview of things to come for SPA Nordic
The 2020 MSHSL State Nordic Ski Meet took place on Friday, February 14 at Giant's Ridge in Biwabik, MN and despite being delayed two days due to extremely cold temperatures, Inga recorded two great races in her first State Meet appearance. The State Meet follows a pursuit format where competitors compete first in the "freestyle" race which then determines their starting placement in the culminating "classic" race. At this year's State Meet, Inga finished 21st in freestyle and in the classic race, which is considered a "power race" and therefore more difficult for a smaller seventh-grader, she competed hard for her final placement of 34th place. Congrats, Inga!
