Construction update: May 2024

We have created this web page to keep the community updated about a series of renovations that will take place on SPA’s Goodrich Campus over the summer of 2024. Although the vast majority of these renovations will be to the interior of the building, there will be some exterior work that neighbors may notice, in addition to the presence of our construction company, Mortenson, and their subcontractors over the course of the summer.

We have planned this summer work very carefully and with our neighbors in mind. Mortenson is a very experienced and thoughtful partner, and will do everything possible to minimize disruption during the construction. An overview of the work that will be taking place over the summer is below.

On Monday, June 3, Mortenson will begin setting up their temporary offices on the northeast side of our fields. The driveway turnaround on Goodrich will also be closed off and prepared for construction staging and deliveries.
Construction will begin on Monday, June 10. Summer 2024 construction scope includes interior renovations and improvements as well as the reroofing of the main building, tuckpointing on the east side of the building, and fire and life safety upgrades.
Mortenson will follow City of Saint Paul requirements regarding construction noise and work hours, as well as notices to neighbors regarding any changes to traffic patterns or temporary road closures.
All work will be completed in time for our first day of school on Thursday, August 22.

Construction FAQ

What does this project involve?

The primary project for summer 2024 is the renovation of the upper floor of the Lower School. This will include renovated classrooms, a renovated and reconfigured library, a new quiet room for prayer and meditation, and several other new/renovated spaces. Exterior work will include the reroofing of the main building, tuckpointing along the exterior on the east side, and improvements to several of our safety systems. Currently, the renovation of the main floor--including classrooms and the front entrance--is scheduled for summer of 2025.

Our partners on the project include Mortenson (construction); HGA (architect); and Nimble Project and Development Services (owner's representative).

What is the construction timeline?

Our construction company, Mortenson, will begin setting up their temporary offices on the northeast side of our fields on Monday, June 3. The driveway turnaround on Goodrich will also be closed off and prepared for construction staging and deliveries. Construction will begin on Monday, June 10, and all work for the summer will be completed in time for our first day of school on Thursday, August 22. Phase II of the project, which will include interior updates to the main floor of the building, is currently scheduled for summer 2025.

What will be the impact on the neighborhood?

As most of the work in summer 2024 will be to the interior of the building, neighborhood disruption should be minimal. There will be some exterior work, including tuckpointing and reroofing; Mortenson will do everything possible to keep noise and disruption to a minimum during this part of the project. As with any construction project, there will be some traffic associated with the work, including deliveries to the Goodrich entrance and construction machinery present on campus. Again, we will do everything possible to minimize the impact of construction traffic on the neighborhood.
