Equity Institute: Grading for Equity
grading for equity: Track overview and Registration
Conference Fee: $975 | Individual registration | Group registration
The Equity Institute's Grading for Equity track is presented by Crescendo Education and will provide an intensive introduction to improved grading practices. Track leaders Joe Feldman and Courtney Fenner will cover traditional grading practices (and their negative impact on teaching and learning), the pillars of equitable grading, and provide insight into the challenges and possibilities of improved grading. Engaging activities to build curiosity and openness to future exploration of grading will also take place. The Crescendo Education group believes that grades are a crucial part of schools, and when grades are inaccurate or reflect bias, it negatively affects a student’s day-to-day learning, along with their relationship to school and their self concept. If we want to truly increase educational opportunities for all students and disrupt persistent cycles of achievement disparities, we need to examine our traditional grading practices and make them more equitable–more accurate, bias-resistant, and motivational.

Diversity, Leadership & Effective Listening: A Social Justice Imperative, Dr. John Igwebuike
This seminar explores the art, skill, and practice of effective listening. Of the major verbal communication modalities--speaking, writing, reading, the receptive mode of listening is least taught, least considered, and least understood. This session asserts listening as a powerful tool, and acknowledges listening as a radical social justice tool to advance diversity, understanding, respect and individual and institutional change. Special attention is given to the notion of “listening-into-healing” and “listeners-as-healers” through the “therapeutic use of self” to foster and support individual/corporate health, self-care, and wellbeing.
