This interactive, informational, challenging and energetic session examines and explores issues of diversity, bias, and oppression in the workplace across America. The session will also introduce findings from key research studies on unconscious bias, including the potential impact of unchecked bias on professional interactions, employment practices, and everyday interactions. We all have an excellent opportunity to be positive role models, powerful decision makers, leaders and effective agents of change, if we have the tools. Are we making any progress?

Session 2: Bias, Microaggressions, and Oppression–Part 1, Carmen Iannarelli
This interactive, informational, challenging, and energetic session examines and explores issues of bias, microaggressions, and oppression in the workplace across America.  This session will provide participants the opportunity to learn what microaggressions are and give insight into how they frequently present in the workplace.  Focusing on various types of microaggressions and messages they send.  Participants will be guided to reflect on how their own biases manifest into microaggressions.  Case studies will be customized to reflect the working environment of participants in the sessions.   We all have an excellent opportunity to be positive role models, powerful decision-makers, leaders, and effective agents of change if we have the tools. Are we making any progress?

3-5 p.m.
Session 3: Disrupting Microaggressions–Part 2, Carmen Iannarelli
In this follow-up session to Bias, Microaggressions, and Oppression, participants will put their knowledge of identifying microaggressions into practice.  This session will begin with a brief overview of microaggressions before shifting the focus to the impact of microaggressions on oppression.  Participants will learn constructive strategies for dealing with microaggressions in the workplace.   This session will urge participants to reflect on their role in mitigating the harm of microaggressions in the workplace.  Participants will leave the session to multiple micro-interventions they can immediately apply. 

5 p.m. Dinner and Keynote with Dr. Joy DeGruy: Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome( 5-6:30 p.m.: Keynote address |
6:30-8 p.m.: Dinner)

Dr. Joy DeGruy joins us for dinner with a keynote presentation that will examine, explore and inspire folks using the work, research  and expertise from the best selling book Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome. 

The dinner and keynote with Dr. DeGruy is included in the conference fee for BootCamp attendees. Members of the public are welcome to register for the dinner and keynote for a standalone fee of $55. Register now

Session 1: The Case for Becoming an AntiRacist, Eddie Moore Jr
The session will challenge the audience to examine and explore issues, challenges and opportunities related to bias, privilege, equity, supremacy, and belief systems. Additionally, we learn how to act against individual and systemic racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression. We need #MooreStudentLeaders committed to justice, equity and change across America. Are you ready? In this session, we will explore why Equity and Inclusion work is essential for you to be a more relevant, trustworthy and informed school leader. You will gain competence and confidence to justify a commitment to antiracism and equity and inclusion programming and become better-equipped to implement decisions and strategies that are more inclusive and equitable.

Session 2: Not In My Organization: How White Supremacy, White Privilege, And Other Forms Of Oppression Undermine Best Intentions, Eddie Moore Jr.
Designed to benefit school communities grappling with the power of whiteness to reassert itself in ways large and small. What are the patterns of power and privilege that continue to drive our school communities and our nation apart? Where do they come from? How do they operate in our everyday lives, institutional policies, and cultural waters? How equipped do we feel to respond to emotional events such as the murder? Do we feel skilled enough to use them as teachable moments that create community and support those most impacted? This interactive and challenging workshop explores how COVID-19 and race, the Movement for Black Lives, monuments and flag toppling, building renaming, and more relate to the impacts power, privilege and oppression have on student life, campus engagement, faculty preparedness, curriculum development, and everyday campus interactions. We will explore U.S. and institutional history and how both connect to today’s deeply polarized, hate-filled political landscape. Finally we’ll learn and practice skills to support personal and institutional transformation amid chaos and activism fatigue.
