SPA will be closed Tuesday, January 23, due to the snow and hazardous driving conditions. Please note that school will be closed entirely on Tuesday, including all classes, athletics, and extracurricular activities. We do not make this decision lightly. Like you, we would much prefer our students to be in school, but today’s extreme weather makes travel unsafe for everyone.
Thank you for your understanding, and please stay safe.
Bryn S. Roberts
Head of School
SPA offers 17 varsity sports with additional teams at the junior varsity and C squad level, and 75% of Upper School students participate in one or more of these teams. Upper School student-athletes are expected to demonstrate a high level of commitment to their sports and their teams. We consider the playing field an extension of the classroom, and gauge athletic achievement both on the outcome of games and on the sportsmanship, continued improvement, and leadership of team members.
SPA's varsity teams are highly competitive and are very successful in conference, sectional, and State tournament competition:
- Twelve SPA sports sent teams or individual athletes to State competition in 2015-16: girls' and boys' hockey, girls' swimming and diving; girls' and boys' Nordic skiing, girls' and boys' fencing (State champions), girls' and boys' Alpine skiing, boys' tennis, boys' golf, boys' track and field.
- The 2015 Wolfpack football team--a cooperative team between SPA, the Blake School, and Minnehaha Academy--went undefeated in the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record.
- The 2015 boys' soccer team won the IMAC conference championships in 2015-16, and the 2016 boys' swimming and diving team won the St. Paul Conference title and the Twin Cities Championship for the second year in a row.
- In addition, individual SPA athletes were recipients of more than 70 All-State and All-Conference honors in 2015-16.
