Athletics

Participation in interscholastic athletics is an important piece of Middle School student life. Almost 80% of SPA students in Grades 6-8 participate on one of our 17 Middle School teams, and cheering on peers is a popular way for Middle Schoolers to spend time with friends after school and on the weekends. For detailed information about SPA's athletic program, visit the Athletics section of our website or contact Jay Schutte, Middle School Athletics Director.

The Middle School Athletics program also includes a Physical Education curriculum; all Middle School students take P.E. as part of their six-day rotation of classes. The P.E. program is designed to expose students to a variety of sports, skills, and knowledge so they will be able to select their future athletic-physical education and lifetime physical activities. All Middle School students participate in P.E., even if they are also on a team.

Middle School teams are listed below. Some Middle Schoolers in Grades 7-8 may be eligibile to compete on Upper School teams at the varsity level; contact Jay Schutte for more information. Most Middle School sports are open to all students in Grades 6-8 regardless of experience; teams marked with an asterisk (Alpine skiing, hockey, swimming and diving, golf, and girls' lacrosse) are open to athletes in Grades 7-8 who have prior experience in these sports, at the discretion of the coach and the Department of Athletics; these are not "learn to" programs.
