annual fund: We did It!

Thanks to more than 1,700 donors, we surpassed the financial goal for the 2014-15 Annual Fund. An amazing 24% of alumni/ae made a gift to the school, besting our peer schools in the Twin Cities and more than doubling national participation averages among independent schools.

We want to thank all alumni/ae donors for being part of the equation and continuing a tradition of excellence. Because of the support of our generous alumni/ae, SPA remains a strong and thriving community. We are so grateful!

June 2015

Graduation 2015

On June 7, 2015, at the 115th Commencement of St. Paul Academy and Summit School, we welcomed 88 young men and women to our alumni/ae community.

Judge Michael J. Davis, retiring Chief Judge for the District of Minnesota, served as SPA's 115th Commencement speaker. Davis and his wife, Sara Wahl, are the parents of SPA alumnus Michael Davis ‘99.

View photos from 2015 Commencement here. Congratulations to the Class of 2015!

Make Your Gift before June 30

There are just two weeks left until the Annual Fund deadline of June 30, and we need your support! Thanks to the many alumni/ae that have already given this year, we are currently at 21% alumni/ae participation, and just have a little bit left to go to reach our goal of 22%! Your gift could help us get there!

Make a secure gift online or call (651) 696-1308 to give over the phone.

We need the ongoing support of every alumnus/a in the SPA community.  If you have not yet made your gift, please know that your tax-deductible contribution, no matter how big or small, makes a difference.

Retiring Faculty at SPA

After many years of dedication and service, SPA is saying goodbye to two beloved faculty members this summer: Carol King and Mary Roszak.

If you wish to pass a message along to either Mary or Carol, please email your message to alumni@spa.edu and we will send it to them on your behalf. Gifts made by June 30 in honor of any teacher will be listed in the 2014-2015 Annual Report, which will be published in fall 2015.

We wish both Carol and Mary well on their new journeys.

Alumni/ae Day of Giving

Just a few more weeks until the Alumni/ae Council’s Alumni/ae Day of Giving! For the first time ever, the Council has set aside a single day to celebrate alumni/ae philanthropy at St. Paul Academy and Summit School.

The Council's goal is to have 800 alumni/ae donors participate in this year's Annual Fund by April 30, so every gift counts. Currently, there are 725 donors--your gift could help the Council reach their goal.

The Annual Fund provides over $1.2 million of the school’s operating budget, picking up where endowment income and tuition revenue leave off. This single day drive allows our alumni/ae the chance to support the fund that provides critical dollars for the school’s operating budget. Give to what moves you:

  • Financial Aid and scholarships
  • Faculty Support
  • Student Programs (Athletics, Arts, Clubs, etc.)
  • Area of Greatest Need

As an added incentive, there will be drawings for prizes from the SPA Spirit Store throughout the day—every alumnus who has given this fiscal year will be eligible. If you want to support SPA and get the chance to win some "swag", be sure to make your gift and help the Council reach their goal!

Worried you might forget to give on April 30? No problem!  You can give now and it will be counted for Day of Giving participation and you’ll still be eligible to win drawings.

Volunteer at SPA

Would you like to be more involved at SPA but aren't sure where to start? There are many great volunteer opportunities for alumni/ae that vary in activity, time commitment, and time of year. Below are some excellent volunteer opportunities available now:

Alumni/ae Council:The Alumni/ae Council represents the alumni/ae body in supporting institutional excellence and promoting a strong sense of community and commitment to the School. The Council operates on the SPA Alumni/ae Council Bylaws and consists of three Committees, each charged with specific goals: events, volunteerism, and fundraising. The Council meets once a month throughout the year (except December, March, and July) and is in charge of the Alumni/ae Council Speaker Series and the Alumni/ae Day of Giving.

Class Agents: the Class Agent program supports key SPA and Alumni/ae Council goals by providing outreach to classmates. Class Agents serve as conduits between individual classes and the school for reunion, special event planning, the Annual Fund and other alumni/ae activities. One of their primary goals is to gather Class Notes for the SPA Magazine twice a year. Although they are not members of the Alumni/ae Council, Class Agents are vital volunteers that help their class stay connected to each other and the school.

College Counseling practice interviews: The Office of College Counseling runs the practice interview program, which provides SPA students the opportunity to work through a "mock interview" with an SPA alumnus to prepare for future college admission interviews or interviews with potential employers or senior project supervisors. Alumni/ae will be provided sample questions and feedback sheets. Interviews take 30-45 minutes and are arranged by the student and alumnus at their convenience.

Senior Project Mentor: During the month of May, all seniors must complete a Senior Project. One component of the project requires seniors to secure an internship for 15-30 hours/week. Alumni/ae can volunteer to be supervisors of these internships. The supervisor will work with the senior to set goals, identify expectations, and to facilitate the implementation of these goals.

If one or more of these volunteer opportunities interest you, please contact Jen Jung, Alumni/ae Relations and Giving Manager at jjung@spa.edu or 651-696-1302.

Alumni/ae Exhibition Opportunity: September 2015

The Harry M. Drake gallery, housed on the Randolph campus, is one of the school’s educational treasures. The Gallery has hosted many major exhibitions, such as the “Ceramics Now Ceramics Then” selected from the Minnesota Museum of American Art collection. We have a tradition of honoring graduates who have made art the major focus of their lives by having an annual juried alumni/ae exhibition during the fall Reunion celebrations.

Working artists, who are celebrating a Reunion this fall (graduated in a year ending in “0” or “5” i.e. 1965, 2010) interested in an exhibition in September 2015, are invited to submit an application.

Applications are due electronically by Monday, April 6, 2015 and should include:

1. Professional art resume.

2. Current biography—100 words or less.

3. Artist Statement—100 words or less.

4. Statement of interest in exhibiting at SPA.

5. 10-15 digital images of work which represent that which would be exhibited. They should be jpgs, up to 300dpi. @ 5” on the shortest side. Please direct technical questions to Matt Edens. This should include an image list with dimensions, title, and year. You may also send an address to a website which has your images.

We may select an artist to show individually, or more likely, to be a part of a group exhibition. Deadline for submission is April 6, 2015. Applicants will be notified no later than April 30, 2015.

Artists will be responsible for their own shipping, but there will be a small stipend and a reception in conjunction with our fall alumni/ae activities. The exhibition information would be included in all of our alumni/ae information.

Please submit questions and application information via e-mail to: Marty Nash, Fine Art Department Chair. Please visit the Harry M. Drake gallery web page to find an online gallery of past exhibitions.

SPA Alumni/ae day of giving

For the first time ever, we have set aside a single day for alumni/ae giving at St. Paul Academy and Summit School.

Each year, over 50% of the donors to the school are alumni/ae, greatly impacting each and every student at SPA. We will celebrate what is made possible at SPA because of alumni/ae generosity, and we ask you to join in by making a gift.

The Alumni/ae Day of Giving is sponsored by the SPA Alumni/ae Council. Our goal is to have as many alumni/ae participate, so every gift counts.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR APRIL 30, 2015 and watch for more information to come!

5’s and 0’s Reunion –Volunteers needed

Mark your calendars for Reunion Weekend 2015: Friday-Saturday September 11-12, 2015. This year, we will celebrate reunions for classes ending in “5” and “0”.

We are currently recruiting Class Reunion Volunteers to assist in planning class parties. We welcome anyone to the committee, no matter where you live. For more information, or to sign up as a volunteer, please email Jen Jung, Alumni/ae Relations and Giving Manager, by January 29, 2015.

Senior Projects – Alumni/ae needed to be Senior Project Supervisors

One of the graduation requirements at SPA is completion of the Senior Project, where seniors must design their own educational program for the month of May. The program must be a structured educational experience in an area approved by the faculty advisors that is acceptable to the school. A committee of faculty and peers reviews their plans. The dates for the Senior Project this year are May 4, 2015 through May 29, 2015.

Many students opt for an internship for the Senior Project. Internships are one of the more successful activities. Through the internship program, seniors have a chance to learn about working in a professional environment and about life beyond these school walls. The seniors on an internship usually spend 15-30 hours/week in a local business, institution, or organization, and they are usually assigned work tasks, research, or projects.

Each senior on an internship must have a Senior Project internship Supervisor. The supervisor will serves as the liaison to the faculty advisors andproject coordinators. The supervisor will works with the senior to set goals, to identify expectations and to facilitate the implementation of these goals.

If you are interested in serving as a Senior Project Supervisor, please contact Anne Marie Shimkus(651) 696-1483 or Eric Severson (651) 696-1411 by January 6, 2015.

Huss Center Construction

It has been an exciting summer as construction began on the Huss Center for the Performing Arts on the Randolph Campus. SPA has launched a website dedicated to the construction, which features a live webcam of the construction site, renderings of the building, a photo gallery, and additional information about the project. We invite all alumni/ae to check out the progress of construction by visiting the website throughout the year. We are looking forward to the Huss Center opening in Fall 2015!

You Can Be Part of the Excitement of the Huss Center

The bulldozers are at work on Randolph Avenue, and we have raised nearly all the money we need, but we can’t finish this campaign without your help! A gift of any size will help complete this campaign.

Three campaign leaders, Honorary Campaign Chair Sandra Roe ’59, and Campaign Co-Chairs Tim O’Brien ‘77 and Libby Hlavka ’82, have agreed to match, dollar for dollar, the first $220,000 donated during this community phase. We hope your commitment to SPA will inspire you to consider a special gift over and above your annual support.

We are offering a special opportunity to donors interested in contributing $3,000 or more. A gift of $3,000 will allow you to name a seat with the wording of your choice.

  • Seats are limited! Only 175 seats remain so we must limit you to four seats.
  • Recognize your student, your family, a special teacher, or your own school legacy.
  • Other naming opportunities remain for those wishing to make a gift of $50,000 or more. Contact Dorothy Goldie for details at dgoldie@spa.edu.

Our campaign closes September 30. Please respond now to have your gift matched and be included in this community-wide effort to conclude our campaign. You can make your donation online at spa.edu.

There are less than 3 weeks left until the Annual Fund deadline of June 30, and we need your support to help us reach our goals.

We need $89,152 to reach our financial goal of $1.2 million and 81 gifts to reach our goal of 22% alumni/ae participation.

Make a secure gift online or call (651) 696-1302 to give over the phone and help us reach these goals. Every gift counts!

We need the ongoing support of every alumnus/a in the SPA community. If you have not yet made your gift, please know that your tax-deductible contribution makes a difference and honors the St. Paul Academy and Summit School experience that continues long after graduation.

April 2014

Huss Center for the Performing Arts: Design Debut

In 2012, the school embarked on an ambitious capital fundraising campaign designed to build a state-of-the-art performing arts center on the Randolph campus. We are happy to report that as of March 2014, we have raised 98% of the $19.2 million needed to construct the new facility, which will be called the Huss Center for the Performing Arts in honor of John and Ruth ‘57 Huss, two of the campaign’s earliest and most generous supporters.

The Huss Center will change the face of the Randolph campus. It will be home to our performing arts programs and will serve as a community gathering space and the school’s largest classroom. We are eager to share the Huss Center’s design and our vision for its use with the entire SPA community.

We invite you to join Head of School, Bryn S. Roberts, on Wednesday, April 9, from 7-8:30 p.m. in Bigelow Commons on the Randolph campus for the public debut of the exterior and interior renderings of the Huss Center. Tim Carl of HGA Architecture, the lead architect for the Huss Center, will present the designs and answer questions.

RSVPS are requested, but not required, so that we may plan appropriately for seating purposes. Please click here to register for the event.

Spring Art Party

Join us for a fun-filled evening of art, food, music, and lively conversation onSaturday May 3, from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. in the Briggs Gymnasium on the Randolph Campus.

The Spring Art Party celebrates St. Paul Academy and Summit School's commitment to the fine arts. All current students enrolled in art classes will have a piece on display in our gallery. Faculty, parents, and alumni/ae of SPA will also be creating small pieces of art to be auctioned. If you are interested in donating a piece of your art, creating a piece of art for the event, or know of someone in the SPA community who you think would have art to donate, please contact either Christine Sand Bluhm or Ellen Konstan, co-chairs of the Spring Art Party.

There will also be a silent auction for our popular "Great Gatherings," which provide opportunities for community events throughout the year. Gatherings include sporting events, dinner parties, cooking classes, art classes, social events, book clubs, and performances.
