Girls' soccer named IMAC Champions with comeback win over Blake
Posted 09/14/2017 10:38AM

On Wednesday, September 13, SPA girls' soccer put together a 3-2 comeback victory in the last ten minutes to defeat the #1 state-ranked Blake Bears and claim the IMAC conference championship.

Despite having the better of possession and technical play, the Spartans were down 2-0 with 7 minutes left in the game. The comeback spark was first lit when defender Tessah Green '19 scored a header on an SPA corner kick in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Ayla Straub added to the rally in the 79th minute on an exceptional finish under immense physical pressure to even the score, 2-2. The Spartans would not settle for a tie, however. In the final minute of play, Olivia Lagos '21 ran through several tackles to win a free kick 25 yards from the Bear goal with 30 seconds to play. Dina Moradian's '18 first free kick flew over the bar but she was awarded another because Blake prematurely left its line. They would soon regret that mistake when Moradian curled the winner over the keeper's hands and under the bar.

In addition to beating their long-time rival, the 3-2 victory over the Bears also secured the IMAC conference title for the Spartans who have not been Conference Champions since 2010.

Next up: Spartan girls' soccer (6-1) plays again this Saturday, September 16 against Section 3A rival Holy Angels. The game is away at 1 p.m. -- Go Spartans!
