How to Apply

We are pleased that you will be applying to St. Paul Academy and Summit School, and look forward to getting to know you better throughout the admission process!

We strongly encourage all applicants to complete their entire application on or before February 1, 2018. In addition, please schedule an interview as soon as possible, and no later than February 1, 2018. Late applications will be accepted, but preference is given to those applications completed by February 1. Please encourage your school administrator and teachers to return their forms to SPA as soon as possible. The Admission Committee meets throughout February and March, and our admission decisions will be mailed on March 29, 2018.

Details about the application process are below. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions about SPA or the application process.

STEP 1: request information and schedule a tour

First, request an Admission Information Packet online; you will receive your Packet in the mail about a week after making your request. Please read carefully through all the material in the Packet, which will include information about SPA's curriculum, programs, and culture. Next, set up a personal tour for your family. During your family tour, an Admission staff member will show you our campus, take you into classrooms to listen and observe, and answer your questions in a personalized setting. Tours of both campuses are offered daily; optimal times to tour are between 8:15 a.m. and noon. To schedule a tour, please call Connie Xiong at 651-696-1433 or email cxiong@spa.edu.

STEP 3: Grade-specific guidelines

Different grades have specific application guidelines; see below for details.

Kindergarten

Playgroup Observation: Each kindergarten applicant will attend a Playgroup Visit. The purpose of this social observation is to observe your child at play within our school setting. The Playgroup lasts for approximately 60 minutes. While children are at play, parents are invited to join in conversation with school administrators, admission and financial aid staff, and current parents in our Lower School living room area. Playgroups will take place on January 27 and February 10, 2018. Please call Connie Xiong at 651-696-1433 or email cxiong@spa.edu to schedule your child’s Playgroup.

Assessment: Each kindergarten applicant will take part in a one-on-one assessment with a member of our admission staff. This will take approximately 30 minutes. Individual assessments will take place throughout December, January and February. Please call Connie Xiong at 651-696-1433 or email cxiong@spa.edu to schedule your child’s assessment.

Grades 1 and 2

Classroom Visit and Assessment: We invite all applicants for Grades 1 and 2 to spend time in one of our classrooms. Grade 1 applicants will spend a half-day in one of our kindergarten classrooms, and Grade 2 applicants will spend a full day in one of our Grade 1/2 mixed-age classrooms. Observation in a classroom setting provides our teachers the opportunity to get to know your child and assess his/her academic progress. The classroom visit also allows our teachers to observe your child’s social interactions with other students. Each Grade 1 and 2 applicant will also take part in an individual assessment with a member of our admission staff sometime during the visit. Please call Connie Xiong at 651-696-1433 or email cxiong@spa.edu to schedule your child’s classroom visit. We offer visits on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays throughout January and February.

Grades 3-5

Classroom Visit: We invite all applicants for Grades 3, 4, and 5 to spend a full day in one of our classes at SPA. Observation in a classroom setting provides our teachers the opportunity to get to know your child and assess his/her academic progress. The classroom visit also allows our teachers to observe your child’s social interactions with other students. All applicants spend the day in our classrooms at their current grade level. Please call Connie Xiong at 651-696-1433 or email cxiong@spa.edu to schedule your child’s classroom visit. We offer visits on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays in January and February.

Assessment: Applicants will take a series of admission tests to assess reading comprehension and quantitative reasoning skills. Please call Connie Xiong at 651-696-1433 or email cxiong@spa.edu to schedule your child’s assessment. Testing will be offered on the Goodrich Campus on Saturday, January 20, 2018, and Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 9-11 a.m.

Grades 6-12

Student Shadow Day: We invite all applicants for Grades 6-12 to spend a full day visiting SPA. The student shadow day is an opportunity to spend an entire day at SPA guided and hosted by a current student. Applicants will also have a conversation with a member of the Admission staff during their shadow day. Please call Connie Xiong at 651-696-1433 or email cxiong@spa.edu to schedule your child’s shadow day. We offer visits on any day of the week, beginning in October.

Assessment: Applicants will take a series of admission tests to assess verbal reasoning, reading comprehension and quantitative reasoning skills. Please call Connie Xiong at 651-696-1433 or email cxiong@spa.edu to schedule your child’s assessment. Testing is offered on the Randolph Campus on Saturday, January 20 and Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 8 a.m.-noon.

step 4: submit the application by february 1

We strongly encourage all applicants to complete their application on or before February 1, 2018. Late applications will be accepted, but preference is given to those applications completed by February 1. PDFs of all application materials are available for download on our Admission Forms page.
