The RubicOnline, SPA's online student newspaper and the digital version of the award-winning Rubicon, is the recipient of a 2017 Pacemaker Award, the highest honor in student journalism. SPA was one of 17 schools in the nation to receive an Online Pacemaker for web and multimedia reporting. The Pacemaker is a program of the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) and is known as "the Pulitzer Prize" of student journalism.
Pacemaker entries are judged by teams of professionals based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography, and graphics. The contests are open to any NSPA member publication. Entries must have been published or broadcast during the dates specified on each entry form.
This year's Pacemaker was accepted by six student-journalists who attended the JEA/NSPA National Journalism Convention in Seattle, Washington. At the convention, students attended workshops and sessions, networked with peer publications, and competed in write-offs. In this year's write-off contest, Marlee Baron won an Excellent award in Newswriting and Andrew Johnson '18 earned an Honorable Mention for Sports Writing
In addition to the Pacemaker, The Rubicon and RubicOnline each won a Best of Show award at the national convention. Best of Show awards are given to the top 10 publications submitted for the convention contest.
