St. Paul United scored four goals in the second period en route to defeating Mahtomedi 6-0 in the Class 1A, Section 4 Final at St. Thomas Arena. With the win, the team advanced to the MSHSL State Tournament for the second year in a row!
Mahtomedi (11-14-3) was outshot by the United 35-14 and failed to capitalize on one of its three power-play chances. St. Paul United (19-6-2), ranked No. 3 in Class 1A in the state in the coaches' poll, scored its first goal when Maggie Connors (VIS) netted a short-handed chance in the first period. Jenna Hoops (VIS) started the second-period, four-goal explosion off with a rebound chance in front of the net. Hoops then assisted on the United's next goal when Clare Tipler '17 (SPA) scored on a slap shot from the point. Already up 5-0 entering the third, the United added one more goal before the final buzzer sounded. St. Paul United goalie Jilian Oncay (VIS) earned the shutout, stopping 14 shots.
The MSHSL Girls' State Hockey Tournament begins next Wednesday, February 22 at the Xcel Energy Center. Brackets will be set for the tournament following the completion of the section tournaments this week. Watch for more details.
