Description of Services
St. Paul Academy and Summit School provides support for students with documented learning disabilities. For students with learning disabilities, as with all students at SPA, the school seeks to foster and support individual success. The school currently assigns three people to support students with learning disabilities: The school’s K-12 Learning Specialist acts as support and resource for K-12 parents, teachers and students. The specialist will generate a Learning Profile which outlines recommendations for the students, teachers and family after evaluating individual testing reports. Assistance is given to teachers to implement recommendations and/or accommodations; The Lower School Psychologist helps teachers to identify students with possible learning disabilities and develops plans for their support; the Lower School Reading Specialist works with K-5 teachers to improve reading curriculum and practice, and works with small groups of K-5 children who exhibit reading difficulties. SPA also offers the services of several academic coaches who work with students in grades 6-12. Academic coaches support students who experienced difficulties stemming from their learning disability with the goal of expanding the student’s repertoire of academic strategies and furthering a student’s academic self-knowledge and self-acceptance.
