K–12 VISUAL ART PROGRAM

Our K–12 visual art program ensures that students are engaged in thoughtful and challenging pursuit of their own creative work. Studio courses are aimed at helping students develop aesthetically and expand their understanding of visual literacy. Instruction is adapted to the individual’s needs and abilities, with technical facility emphasized primarily as a vehicle for creative expression. Evaluation is based on an individual’s performance and progress in his/her creative media.

LS Visual Art

The Lower School art program enables students to develop self-esteem by transforming ideas into personal visual expressions via various artistic methods and techniques. In becoming visual learners, students become more sensitive and aware of the world around them. The LS art program also provides an outlet for creative and emotional expression as an essential component of balance and joy in our students’ lives.

MS/US Visual Art

The Middle/Upper School visual art program promotes an in-depth experience, balancing process and product and allowing students to learn through both “successes” and “mistakes.” Students have many opportunities to shape their experiences to their own talents and interests under the guidance and mentorship of SPA teachers. The overarching goal is for students to have rich and varied physical and intellectual experiences as a platform for future art-making and a lifelong appreciation of the visual world.
