K–12 MUSIC PROGRAM

The K–12 music program aims to develop an understanding of and a love for musical expression in its many varieties.

The program emphasizes mastery of musicianship skills, meeting the students at their own levels of ability and interest. Formal and informal public performances are presented for the school community throughout the year, and a major musical theater production is presented each spring.

LS Music

The Lower School music program immerses students in the creative process. Singing, speech, instruments, and movement all are vehicles for creative exploration, in the process developing skills in critical thinking and an understanding of aesthetic values. Each student contributes to the musical community as creator, composer, and performer.

MS and US Music

The Middle School/Upper School music program provides students with enriching creative experiences that reflect our understanding that students learn a great deal about life through the study of music.  Students learn communication skills, self-discipline, risk-taking, responsibility, and how to work together to achieve common goals. Technical ability is developed by working in small- and large-group rehearsals to prepare concert literature ranging from current pop favorites to classical oratorios. Students' musical journeys at SPA lay a foundation for the lifelong appreciation of music and the performing arts.
